Landscaping Services in Oak Ridge, TN
Rock Solid designs and installs landscapes throughout Oak Ridge that work with East Tennessee's climate, soil, and terrain. Whether you're starting from bare ground on a newer build or transforming an overgrown, outdated yard on one of Oak Ridge's older mid-century lots, we create outdoor spaces that look intentional and hold up through Tennessee's demanding growing seasons.
Good landscaping in Oak Ridge goes beyond appearance. It's about plant selection that survives summer heat and partial shade, drainage that prevents erosion on sloped lots, and design that fits how you actually use your property. We get the details right so you're not replacing plants or re-grading beds a few years down the road.
How landscaping works in Oak Ridge
Every landscaping project in Oak Ridge starts with an assessment of your soil, drainage, sun exposure, and site conditions. Oak Ridge's heavy hardwood canopy on older lots significantly affects light availability, moisture levels, and root competition, all factors that determine which plants will thrive and how beds should be designed. Skipping this step leads to plants that struggle and landscapes that need constant intervention.
From that assessment, we develop a design, source plants from reputable Tennessee growers, and install everything with proper soil preparation and bed construction. We communicate throughout the project so you understand what we're doing and why.
Local considerations for Oak Ridge
Oak Ridge's clay-heavy soils require amendment for most planting beds. We prepare soil properly so plants establish quickly and root systems can develop.
Mature hardwood canopy throughout Woodland, Jefferson, and East Village neighborhoods creates dense shade conditions that limit turf and favor shade-tolerant native plantings.
Slopes and wooded ravine edges throughout the Cumberland Plateau foothills need erosion-resistant plantings and grading that prevents soil loss during Tennessee's heavy rain events.
East Tennessee's USDA Zone 7a climate allows a wide plant palette, but summer heat and periodic drought mean moisture-tolerant and native species consistently outperform many popular nursery choices.
Older Oak Ridge properties frequently have compacted soil from decades of foot traffic and root displacement. We evaluate and address this before planting.

Landscaping services we provide in Oak Ridge
Below is a breakdown of the specific landscaping work we handle in Oak Ridge. Each description reflects the site conditions, terrain, and property types common to this area.
Landscape Design & Installation
Oak Ridge has a mix of newer construction lots with bare, compacted subsoil and older established properties with dense tree cover and decades of root development. Both present distinct challenges. On new builds, we assess soil condition, address grading and drainage first, then design and install a landscape that frames the home and establishes quickly. On older lots, we work around existing trees and grade, designing plantings that complement the mature canopy rather than compete with it.
Planting: Trees, Shrubs & Perennials
Oak Ridge sits in USDA Zone 7a, with hot, humid summers and periodic drought stress from July through September. We source from reputable Tennessee growers and prioritize native and regionally adapted species: plants like native serviceberry, oakleaf hydrangea, and switchgrass with proven track records in this climate. The goal is a planting plan that thrives without constant intervention, not one that looks good on installation day and struggles the following summer under Oak Ridge's clay soil and summer heat.
Sod Installation & Lawn Renovation
Compaction and shade are the two biggest challenges for lawns in Oak Ridge. Older lots with established tree canopy often support thin, patchy turf that no amount of overseeding will fix without addressing the root cause, whether that's shade, compacted soil, or both. We evaluate existing conditions first, amend soil where needed, address any grading issues, and recommend the right grass type for your sun exposure and intended use. Fescue performs well in Oak Ridge's partial-shade conditions; we'll explain the trade-offs during the estimate.
Mulch & Rock Bed Installation
Sloped planting beds throughout Oak Ridge present a specific challenge: mulch migrates downhill without proper edging and bed construction. We install clean, defined edges that hold bed material in place, apply mulch at the right depth to suppress weeds and protect roots, and select rock or mulch materials appropriate for your slope, sun exposure, and the plants in the bed. On shaded lots, we avoid materials that hold excess moisture against crowns and contribute to fungal pressure.
Grading & Drainage Improvements
Oak Ridge's clay-heavy soils and rolling terrain create drainage problems across a wide range of properties: water pooling near foundations, soggy low spots in lawns, and runoff channels cutting through planting beds. We assess the grade and water flow patterns of your property and correct problems through regrading, swale construction, and surface drainage modifications integrated into the landscape design.
Erosion Control & Slope Stabilization
Open slopes and ravine-edge lots throughout Oak Ridge erode quickly without the right plant cover and soil stabilization. Bare mulch alone is not enough on steeper grades. Deep-rooted plantings, erosion-control fabric, and strategic ground cover placement are required to actually hold soil in place through Tennessee's heavy rain events. We design stabilization solutions that address the erosion problem long term, not just until the next heavy rain.

RockSolid was a pleasure to work with. Mathew & crew thought out of the box to make our project perfect. We had an idea sketched on a piece of paper and Mathew took that and ran with it. We had big slabs of stone for walkways over our dry creek waterway. Threw in larger rocks around and mixed with landscape to give a natural look. Once all the shrubs, trees, grass and accent plantings start maturing it will be beautiful. We choose plantings that have green leaves year around and bloom throughout the seasons. So interest year around without traditional evergreen trees and shrubs. We highly recommend Mathew. He is thorough, gives attention to detail, honest and a good person to work with.

How our process works
We follow a consistent process on every project, consult, plan, estimate, install, and walk through, so you always know where things stand and what to expect next.
Consult
We walk your property with you, listen to what you want to accomplish, and evaluate the current conditions: soil, drainage, sun exposure, and existing plant material.
In Oak Ridge: In Oak Ridge, we pay close attention to canopy cover, root systems from mature hardwoods, and how drainage moves through the clay soil. These factors drive plant selection and bed design throughout the project.
Plan/Design
We develop a planting plan and site layout based on your goals, the conditions we observed, and your budget. Material selections and plant species are chosen for Oak Ridge's specific conditions.
In Oak Ridge: We specify plants proven in East Tennessee's climate, shade-tolerant natives for Oak Ridge's wooded lots and drought-tolerant species for sunnier exposures, rather than relying on generic plant lists.
Estimate
You receive a written scope covering materials, plant species, labor, and a project timeline. No vague line items.
In Oak Ridge: For Oak Ridge properties with drainage challenges or significant slope, we include any grading or drainage work as separate, clearly defined line items so you can see exactly what the site requires.
Install
We execute the project in the proper sequencing: site prep and grading before planting, irrigation before mulch, and sod last. We communicate throughout.
Walkthrough
After installation, we walk the finished project with you, cover basic care guidance, and address any remaining punch list items before we close out the job.
Frequently Asked Questions
